I've seen this play out in hiring already. A recruiter friend tells me she's started asking candidates about their AI tool usage in interviews. Not as a formal requirement, but as a proxy for adaptability and productivity potential. Two candidates with identical backgrounds? The one who can articulate how they use Claude for research or Midjourney for presentations gets the edge.

The Uncomfortable Class Dimensions

We need to talk about how this maps onto existing inequalities.

AI tool access has a cost dimension. ChatGPT Plus is $20 per month. Claude Pro is $20 per month. Midjourney is $10 per month. For a knowledge worker earning $100,000 per year, this is trivial. For someone earning $35,000 per year, these subscriptions represent meaningful budget decisions.

Yes, free tiers exist. But free tiers are deliberately limited. They're enough to sample the technology, not enough to integrate it into serious workflows. The productivity gains require the paid versions.

There's also a time dimension. Learning to use AI tools effectively takes experimentation. It takes trial and error. It takes the mental bandwidth to engage with something new. Workers who are overworked, stressed, or juggling multiple jobs don't have that bandwidth. Workers with comfortable jobs and reasonable hours do.

And there's a permission dimension. Many workers don't feel authorized to use AI tools at work. They're not sure if it's allowed. They're worried about being seen as cheating. They don't want to ask and risk looking foolish. Meanwhile, workers in high-trust environments with supportive managers feel free to experiment openly.

All of these dimensions—cost, time, permission—correlate with existing class structures. Higher-paid workers can afford the subscriptions. Higher-status workers have the bandwidth to learn. Workers in professional environments feel authorized to experiment. The result is that AI is currently widening existing gaps rather than closing them.

What Companies Are Getting Wrong

Most companies are handling this transition poorly.

The most common approach is passive: make AI tools available and let employees figure it out. This sounds egalitarian but actually maximizes inequality. Self-starters adopt quickly. Everyone else doesn't. The gap widens.

The second most common approach is top-down mandates: everyone must use AI for certain tasks by a certain date. This sounds equitable but often backfires. Workers who feel forced into AI adoption develop resistance. Training is rushed and inadequate. The tools get blamed for failures that are really implementation failures.

The approach that actually works is supported experimentation: give everyone access to tools, provide excellent training, create psychologically safe spaces to learn and fail, share use cases and workflows that are working, and make AI proficiency part of career development conversations without making it punitive.

Very few companies are doing this well. Most are either ignoring the transition entirely or handling it ham-fistedly.

The Credential Question

Here's a development worth watching: the emergence of AI proficiency credentials.

LinkedIn now offers verified badges for AI tool proficiency. Google has certification programs. Various bootcamps are marketing "AI-augmented professional" training. It's easy to be cynical about credentialism, but credentials serve a purpose. They give workers a way to signal proficiency that's legible to employers. They give employers a screening mechanism that's easier than testing during interviews.

The risk is that credentials become another form of gatekeeping. If certain demographics have less access to training programs, certifications will amplify existing inequalities rather than reduce them.

The opportunity is that credentials could provide an on-ramp for workers who want to adopt but don't know where to start. A structured program with a clear outcome can be less intimidating than undirected self-learning.

What Individuals Should Do

If you're not using AI tools in your work, you need to start. I'm not being hyperbolic. The productivity gap is real. The career implications are real. Waiting until your employer mandates it means you'll be catching up instead of leading.

Start with one tool. ChatGPT or Claude—it doesn't matter which. Use the free tier until you've developed a habit, then upgrade to paid for the full experience.

Start with one use case. Pick a task you do repeatedly. Email drafting. Report writing. Research summaries. Document review. Learn to do that one thing well with AI assistance before expanding.

Be patient with yourself. The first few attempts will be awkward. You'll get outputs that miss the mark. You'll spend time prompting that feels wasted. This is normal. The skill is in learning to collaborate with AI, and like any collaboration, it takes practice.

Document what works. When you find a prompt that reliably produces good output, save it. Build a personal library of effective workflows. Share them with colleagues who are also learning.

Don't hide your AI use. The impulse to keep it secret is understandable but counterproductive. You want credit for your increased output. You want to normalize AI use in your workplace. You want to learn from colleagues who are also adopting. Visibility serves all of these goals.

What Society Should Do

The AI class divide is not inevitable. It's a policy choice.

Public libraries could provide free access to AI tools, just as they provide free internet access today. This would address the cost dimension for workers who can't afford subscriptions.

Unemployment offices and job training programs could include AI proficiency as a core component, just as they now include basic computer skills. This would address the training dimension for workers who lack workplace support.

Schools could integrate AI tools into education starting in middle school, normalizing their use and building skills before students enter the workforce. This would address the generational pipeline.

Companies could be incentivized—through tax benefits or regulatory frameworks—to provide AI training to all employees, not just high-performers. This would address the workplace permission dimension.

None of these interventions are technically difficult. They're questions of priority and resource allocation.

The Deeper Question

Underneath the productivity statistics and salary differentials, there's a philosophical question we're not really grappling with: What happens to human identity when some people are dramatically more capable than others, not because of talent or effort but because of tools?

We've had versions of this question before. Cars made some people faster than others. Calculators made some people better at math. Computers made some people more organized. But AI feels different because it augments cognitive work—the work that many professionals consider central to their identity and self-worth.

When a lawyer who uses AI can do in an hour what takes another lawyer all day, how do we think about the value each provides? When a writer with AI can produce more content at comparable quality, what does that mean for the writer's craft and identity?

I don't have answers to these questions. But I think they'll become unavoidable as the productivity gap widens. The AI class divide isn't just about economics. It's about who we are and what we value in an era when intelligence itself is becoming a commodity.

For now, the practical advice is clear: adopt the tools. Develop the skills. Don't get left behind.
