Fraudsters are using AI to clone voices, create deepfakes, and automate scams at unprecedented scale. The attacks are getting smarter. Here's how to protect yourself and your family.
Jennifer got the call at 2 PM on a Tuesday. Her daughter was crying, panicked, saying she'd been in a car accident and needed money for bail. The voice was unmistakably her daughter's—the same pitch, the same speech patterns, the same way she said "Mom" when she was scared.

The Deepfake Evolution
Voice cloning is scary. Deepfake video is scarier.

Who's Most Vulnerable
Anyone can fall for an AI scam. The technology is good enough to fool sophisticated people in the right circumstances.

How to Protect Yourself
Defending against AI scams requires updating your mental model. You can no longer trust that a voice is who it claims to be. You can no longer trust that a video shows what it appears to show.
Establish a family code word. Create a secret word or phrase that family members can use to verify identity in emergencies. If someone claiming to be your child asks for money, ask for the code word. A scammer won't know it. Verify through a separate channel. If you receive an unexpected request—for money, for information, for action—verify it through a different communication method. If someone calls claiming to be your bank, hang up and call the number on your card. If a colleague emails requesting a wire transfer, walk to their office or call their known number. Be skeptical of urgency. Scammers create time pressure because verification takes time. "Don't tell anyone." "We need to act now." "There's no time to explain." These are red flags. The technology companies enabling AI scams—often unintentionally—are beginning to respond.

Some states have passed laws specifically criminalizing deepfakes and voice cloning for fraud. Federal legislation is pending. But prosecution requires finding the perpetrators, and prosecution doesn't help victims recover their money.
Civil remedies against AI companies have been largely unsuccessful. ElevenLabs and similar services include terms of service prohibiting fraudulent use, and courts have generally held that's sufficient to shield them from liability for user misuse.
The legal system that might deter these crimes hasn't adapted to their new form. For now, prevention is more practical than relying on law enforcement.

We trusted that the voice on the phone was who it claimed to be. We trusted that video showed reality. We trusted that our senses were reliable. These trusts have been fundamental to human interaction for all of history.
AI has broken these trusts. The voice on the phone might be a clone. The video call might be a deepfake. Your senses can be deceived by technology that's freely available and constantly improving.
Adapting to this reality requires a painful adjustment. We need to become more suspicious, more verification-oriented, less trusting of direct perception. This has costs—for efficiency, for spontaneity, for the texture of human interaction.
But the alternative—remaining trusting in an environment designed to exploit trust—has greater costs. The $12 billion lost to fraud last year is just the financial toll. The emotional toll—the violated trust, the embarrassment, the damaged relationships—is harder to measure and maybe worse.
Jennifer, who nearly fell for the voice clone of her daughter, says she's changed how she thinks about communication.
"I hate that I have to be suspicious now," she told me. "When my phone rings and it's my daughter's name, I still wonder for a second if it's really her. That's a terrible thing to have to think about your own child."
