Most education technology rankings rely on download numbers or subscription revenue. Anthropic took a different approach, tracking three specific metrics: knowledge retention at 30 days, the ability to explain concepts without the tool present, and whether students could identify errors in AI-generated content.

The $9 Khanmigo price point stands out. Anthropic's researchers noted that cost remains the single largest barrier to equitable AI adoption, with 41% of students in lower-income districts reporting they can't access paid tools their peers use.

"We're seeing a two-tier system emerge where students with resources get AI tutors that actually teach, while others get basic autocomplete that does the thinking for them," said Dr. Elena Voss, Anthropic's education research lead, in an interview with The Pulse Gazette. Where Educators and Students Disagree

The report surfaces a tension that hasn't received enough attention. Teachers and students rank the best AI tools for students almost inversely when asked about "helpfulness."

The Security Question Nobody's Answering

Here's what the report doesn't resolve: student data protection. Anthropic found that 54% of students have uploaded personal information—essays with identifying details, mental health disclosures, family circumstances—to AI tools without understanding retention policies.

The company audited 23 popular education AI tools for its index. Eleven retained conversation data indefinitely for model training. Six shared data with third-party advertisers. Only three—Claude, Khanmigo, and a specialized version of Perplexity—offered verifiable deletion within 30 days.

This matters because the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) predates generative AI by decades. What Changes in September

The index isn't static. Anthropic plans quarterly updates, with the next release timed for back-to-school season. Two developments to watch: multimodal reasoning benchmarks (how well students synthesize across text, image, and audio) and "AI resistance" metrics measuring whether students can complete tasks when tools fail or are unavailable.

The latter addresses a concern raised by several education researchers in the report: dependency. Students scoring highest on AI-assisted assignments sometimes crashed on identical paper-based tests, suggesting they hadn't internalized the material.

"The best AI tools for students will be the ones that make themselves unnecessary," Voss said. "We're not there yet. Most tools are optimized for engagement, not graduation."

Microsoft's rumored education-specific Copilot variant and Apple's delayed AI tutoring features for iPad could reshuffle these rankings by fall. Anthropic's researchers say they've already tested early versions of both under non-disclosure agreements and found "meaningful gaps" in the current builds—though they declined to specify further.

For now, the data suggests a fragmented landscape where no single tool dominates, and where the best AI tools for students vary dramatically by subject, age, and learning goal. The schools making headway aren't those with the biggest budgets. They're the ones teaching students to think about AI, not just with it.
